Pronto? Let’s get started!
Cosa sono i Phrasal Verbs?
In termini semplici, un Phrasal Verb è un verbo composto formato da due (o a volte tre) elementi:
Verbo base + Particella (Preposizione o Avverbio).
L’unione di queste due parole crea un significato idiomatico nuovo, quasi sempre impossibile da dedurre traducendo le singole parole.
Esempio con il verbo To Give (Dare):
Give (Dare) + Up (Su) = Give up (Arrendersi / Smettere).
Give (Dare) + In (Dentro) = Give in (Cedere).
Give (Dare) + Away (Via) = Give away (Regalare / Rivelare un segreto).
Differenze fra i 4 tipi di phrasal verbs
Transitivi e Intransitivi
Intransitivi: non hanno bisogno di un complemento oggetto. L’azione si regge da sola.
Esempio: The plane took off. (L’aereo è decollato).
Transitivi: hanno bisogno di un complemento oggetto (chi? che cosa?).
Esempio: please, turn on the lights. (Per favore, accendi le luci).
Separabili e Inseparabili
I Phrasal Verbs transitivi si dividono a loro volta in :
Inseparabili: il verbo e la particella non possono MAI essere divisi.
Esempio:
✅ I am looking for my keys. (Sto cercando le mie chiavi).
❌ I am looking my keys for. (Errore grave!).
Separabili: il verbo e la particella possono essere separati dal complemento oggetto.
Esempio:
✅ She took off her coat.
✅ She took her coat off. (Entrambe le forme sono perfette!).
La regola salva-vita del Pronome
Se in un verbo separabile sostituisci il complemento oggetto con un pronome (es: it, them, him), il pronome DEVE andare in mezzo al verbo frasale.
Esempio:
✅ Turn it on. (Accendila).
❌ Turn on it. (Sbagliatissimo!).
I Phrasal Verbs a tre elementi
Alcuni verbi sono composti da Verbo + Avverbio + Preposizione. Sono sempre inseparabili!
Esempio:
I am looking forward to the weekend.

Ecco come studiarli:
1. Non studiarli in ordine alfabetico a memoria: imparare oggi tutta la lettera “G” creerà solo una gran confusione.
2. Studiali per “argomento”: raggruppali per contesti (es. Viaggi: check in, take off, drop off; Relazioni: ask out, get along, break up).
